Verizon Wireless Broadband
Verizon said today that it expects to provide the first local carrier in offering high speed data access to both laptop and mobile phone users throughout the region. The name of the network will be known as: “EV-DO”, which will allow users to reach speeds similar to DSL lines on both their phones and laptops.
The average speed will be about 400 to 700kbps, 10 times or so faster than any other dial-up service offered. So how much will this service cost? It is expected that the price of Verizon Wireless broadband will run approx. $79.99 monthly (w/unlimited usage) or $59.99 (when used together with a calling plan). If you plan on using a cell phone with this service you will also need to purchase a V-Cast, which runs an additional 15$/monthly, allowing the delivery of information such as video transfer. Laptop users will need to purchase a PC air card, which costs around $100 and higher.
Other providers such as Sprint are also expected to jump in on the action across multiple business districts sometime during the end of the year with coverage ranging from San Francisco to Santa Rosa.
