Sprint Nextel acquisition

Spring Nextel mobile phone company announced today that it plans on purchasing two small cell phone operators that provide Sprint Service, which is scheduled to add an additional 332,000 subscribers to the newly merged company.

The agreement: Spring Nextel will pay $219 million dollars to acquire IWO Holdings, Incorporated (located in Albany, NY) which will allow Sprint-Nextel to provide service across upstate NY, New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The other acquisition that Sprint Nextel will be making is the $212.5 million purchase of Gulf Coast Wireless (of Baton Rouge, LA) - a private company which will allow to provide Sprint an additional 95,000 subscribers in Mississippi and Southern Louisiana.

The combined merger of Sprint and Nextel currently brings in service to over 40 million subscribers, making it a #3 contender against the leaders Verizon Wireless and Cingular.

My thoughts? Well.. to be honest my contract with Sprint is up in January and I plan on switching back to Cingular. Cingular simply offered less fees unlike Sprint. I am not very happy with my Sprint service and the only thing I believe that company got going for them is the good stylish cell phones, but other than that - I plan on cancelling my contract shortly and can’t wait to find a new plan with Cingular, to me there are less hassles over there then at Sprint, and less hidden fees.

Please post some comments about your opinions toward Sprint/Nextel/Cingular, I’m interested in knowing how the service was for you guys.
